Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains is excited to announce that a North Texas Gold Award Girl Scout, Lynda Clayton, has been awarded a national scholarship from Girl Scouts of the USA. Lynda’s Gold Award project, “Not One More: A Mission to Eliminate Youth Suicide” addessed and positively impacted mental health through teaching fundamental mental health skills and mental health habits of teenagers.
The Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award Scholarship recognizes the outstanding achievement of and provides financial support to one Gold Award Girl Scout per Girl Scout Council. The scholarship is possible thanks to support from the Arconic Foundation and Kappa Delta Foundation.
“Not One More” understands that mental health must be reinforced year-round in order to break the stigma surrounding the topic. Through her project, Lynda aimed to create a school culture that “…destigmatizes discussions around mental health and asking for help. Students must know who their support system is and what to do when they feel that they are struggling.” Lynda made all of the activities and resources she created for her project available online for free at eliminatesuicide.com.
The Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, available to Girl Scouts in high school who create sustainable change on a community or world issue. Gold Award Girl Scouts address the root cause of a problem, plan and implement innovative solutions to drive change, and lead a team of people to success.
Having devoted 100 hours to her Gold Award project, Lynda advises Girl Scouts who are thinking of pursuing the Gold Award to “find something you are passionate about. The Gold Award is not easy to earn, but it is incredibly rewarding to earn.”
“We are incredibly proud that Lynda has earned national recognition for her Gold Award project,” said Becky Burton, ceo of Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains Council. “Lynda shows the true grit of Girl Scouts and what it means to live with courage, confidence, and character, to make the world a better place.”
