Important Summer & Outdoor Programs Update

Video: Important Summer and Outdoor Programs Update

As our community situation continues to change rapidly with COVID-19, the plans for Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains must shift accordingly. We have made the difficult decision to cancel summer 2020 resident camp and High Adventure Trips. Please know that we did not come to this decision lightly.

Girls’ safety is our number one priority.
We have waited as long as possible to make this decision and sought the counsel of many. Even considering that our camps adhere to the most stringent safety protocols and that stay-at-home orders could lift in early summer, social distancing and crowd limits will likely remain in effect, and too much is still unknown with respect to the spread of the virus. Additionally, opening resident camp in June would mean convening girls, young adults, and our staff early in the post-outbreak recovery period. We are simply not willing to risk gathering large numbers of Girl Scouts together before we know it is truly safe to do so.

We’re excited about the future and what's possible.
We know that resident camp is something many Girl Scouts look forward to more than anything else the entire year. It’s a place where girls gain independence and make lifelong friends.

Planning is full steam ahead for an entire year of exciting programs and activities, including Resident Camp 2021 which we expect to be bigger and better than ever. In the meantime, we will work hard to give your girls safe and fun alternatives to summer camp sessions. We plan to open camps for troop camping, and we are committed to providing as many camp-like opportunities as we possibly can in the late summer and into the fall, as the situation allows. The following are already being planned, with more to come.

  • Resident-like weekend camps
  • Day camp at Camp Timberlake!
  • Day camps at Stevens Ranch, Kiwanis, and Rio Blanco
  • Horse programs in the fall
  • Activities and events hosted by partners in our communities
  • Access to the STEM Center of Excellence in partnership with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas
  • Rescheduled DIVA trips

For now, girls will continue to enjoy virtual Girl Scout programming and activities from Girl Scouts at Home. We will continue to work with our community partners, volunteers, and families to meet the challenge and come out on top.

Cookie Bucks can now be used for more.
We know girls work extremely hard during the Girl Scout Cookie Program to earn Cookie Bucks for camp. To ensure girls can still use their Cookie Bucks, the following changes have been put into effect:

  • Cookie Bucks expiration has been extended to December 31, 2020.
  • This year only, Cookie Bucks may be used to renew girl memberships between now and September 30, 2020.
  • Cookie Bucks may be applied to:
    • Council-sponsored programs
    • Retail purchases
    • G.I.R.L. 2020 registration
    • Membership year kickoff August 22, 2020

We will continue to communicate updates.
As the situation changes, we will communicate updates via email, social media, and our website. When it’s safe to offer in-person programming again, we will give at least one month’s advanced notice for event registration.

Our top priority is girl safety. As always, we’re committed to making Girl Scouts possible for our girls, families, and volunteers during this unprecedented challenge. Thank you for your continued support and connection to Girl Scouts. Stay safe until we see you again!
