Tents

Learn how to choose a tent, places to tent camp and tent safety, how to "lash" a tent, what knots to use, how to take down and pack the tent, and proper care of a tent.  A refresher of "Leave No Trace" is also part of this class.  Prerequisite:  New Member Orientation, Outdoor 101, and Cabin Camping.

Cabin Camping

This is NOT a classroom style course.  Participants will learn how to build a campfire safely, troop meal planning and how to properly care for equipment, basic knots and "Leave No Trace".   Bring:  "Outdoor Education in Girl Scouting" book and items from "What to Pack Checklist".  Prerequisite:  Must have taken Outdoor 101 within a year of Cabin Camping training.

Outdoor 101

This training is a prerequisite for all other outdoor classes, you will learn camping policies, council procedures and be ready for Cabin Camping - the next step in your outdoor training.  Learn safety procedures, packing and dressing for the outdoors, and outdoor progression steps to prepare your girls for a camping adventure!  You will also learn about council Girl Scout camps along with other camping facilities.

Starry Night: Constellation Mapping

Girls get the chance to visit Morgan Jones Planetarium and learn about mapping the night sky.

This event is free for the Girl Scouts but donations of school supplies would be appreciated!

 

AND if you'd like to make it into a badge activity, below are some suggested steps to earn this badge :

1. Visit the planetarium.

2. Map the constellations/night sky.

Others to be completed at troop level or individually.

3. Go on a night hike.

4. Participate in the Great Worldwide Star Count between October 2 and October 16, 2015.

Leadership Essentials/Journeys

Leaders will explore the Girl Scout processes which are "girl led, learning by doing and cooperative learning".  You will learn how to use available resources including the core program, "Journeys" and the Girl Guide.  Sample the Fun of Journey activities, you become the girl.  Prerequisite:  New Member Orientation
