Tents

Learn how to choose a tent and places to tent camp.  Tent safety is also taught for example: preparing for the weather, best lighting, and appropriate bedding.  How to lash a tent and what knots to use: half hitch, bowline, taut line. How to take down and pack a tent. Proper care of a tent is discussed, how to repair, what to do if tent has moisture. Leave No Trace is also a part of this training.

You will have the opportunity to experiment with a tent. Prerequisite: New Member Orientation, Outdoor 101, Cabin Camping  

Gold Award Training

The Gold Award can be earned by Senior or Ambassador Girl Scouts. This workshop reviews GSUSA guidelines for each award. Both girls and leaders are encouraged to attend the Gold workshop. Topics include how to lead girls through the requirements, building a timeline, selecting projects and the required paperwork.

Outdoor101

Outdoor 101 is an introduction to camping and the outdoors. It covers the basic outdoor skills as well as how to prepare to go camping and what to pack. It also introduces all participants to the properties availabe throughout the council which have troop camping  available. You are not ready to go camping yet. Taking this course is a prerequisite to Cabin Camping which enables you to actually take your troop camping. The course is a 3 hour course and you are welcome to bring you won dinner! No child care provided.

Celebration And Recognition Event

Join us to recognize the CARE  Award adult recipients and the girl Bronze, Silver & Gold Award winners from this past year!

The ceremony will begin at 1:30pm with a reception immediately following.  There is no cost but prior registration is appreciated.

Girl Scout Weekend at SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium

Join us Friday, November 7th through Sunday, November 9th at SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium during Girl Scout Weekend for discounted tickets for Girl Scouts and their families! Tickets will be $10 for Girl Scouts and their families at both SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium, and LEGOLAND Discovery Center. Troops can book an Educational Workshop for $2 per girl on Saturday November 8th (11:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m.) or Sunday November 9th (1:00 p.m.) and work towards completion of a badge.

A Taste of Backpacking

Are you interested in advancing your camping skills? Are you ready to take the next step and hit the trail? Join us at Stevens Ranch on Saturday, November 15th from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. for A Taste of Backpacking. This daylong event will give you the basic skills you need to get ready to pack your bag and hit the trail for a day, overnight, or a whole week!

Bronze and Silver Award Workshop

The Bronze and Silver Awards are the highest awards that a Junior Girl Scout and a Cadette Girl Scout can earn.  This workshop will give you the information that you will need to help find the right take action project, manage the project, and complete the final report.  Both girls and adults will benefit from the activities and information at the workshop.

Fall Outdoor Expo

Join us at Camp Rio Blanco and show others what you know about the outdoors! Gather up your troop and head to camp to teach others your favorite camping or outdoor skills. Troops plan and prepare different “outdoor activity” booths.  If troops aren’t quite ready to host their own outdoor booth, please go ahead and plan to attend and see some of the many activities that camp has to offer. Booth activities may include: knots games, archery, hiking, SWAPS, crafts, simple first aide, cooking and much more.  For more information about hosting a booth, please contact Summer Young.

Outdoor 101- Johnson County

 Learn council policies, procedures, proper dress and camp rules. You will receive a copy of Outdoor Education in Girl Scouting. If you have not completed New Member Orientation contact Volunteer Services Dept  At this prerequisite course for all outdoor classes, you will be able to identify the 8 Basic Outdoor Skills for example: Outdoor Manners (Leave No Trace) leave natural objects like flowers, rocks, shells, etc.
